Our team is looking for a part time Medical Director (approx 20 hours per week) for OurLegacy in Orlando, Florida. OurLegacy is a hospital-based organ procurement organization (OPO) and designated by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) as the only organ procurement organization to serve east central Florida. It is one of only 57 organ procurement organizations (OPOs) in the United States. OurLegacy’s medical director is the clinical leader of the organization and oversees the implementation of all policies, procedures and protocols for the successful recovery of deceased donor organs for transplantation. Organ donor patients are critical care patients so critical care physicians are pivotal to optimizing both the number and viability of organs from deceased donors.
OurLegacy’s new medical director will ideally have a critical care, pulmonary, anesthesiology or trauma surgery background. Using these skills, the medical director evaluates the suitability of potential donor candidates and optimizes donor organ function after declaration of death. Given the scarcity of OPO medical director positions in the U.S., it is expected that most candidates will not possess all the necessary knowledge/skills to apply, however, it is anticipated these skills will be developed over time. The medical director also leads quality assessment/performance improvement activities to ensure the OPO is achieving the outcome standards as defined by CMS and the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN).
The most critical role for the OurLegacy medical director is relationship development that will achieve the goals of the organization. Relationships with the OurLegacy team, critical care physicians/nurses throughout east central Florida, and with transplant programs throughout Florida and the U.S. are key to helping as many donor families and transplant recipients benefit from the miracle of organ donation and transplantation.
